This multi-tiered structure is unique compared to other Egyptian tombs from the period, which typically had only two to three levels.
Life and Death in Ancient Aswan
The tombs were used for approximately 900 years, from the sixth century B.C. to the second or third century A.D. This period includes:
- Persian Rule (525 to 404 B.C.): The first foreign dominion over Egypt.
- Greek Ptolemaic Dynasty: Initiated by Ptolemy I Soter, a general of Alexander the Great.
- Roman Rule: When Egypt became a province of the Roman Empire.
The tombs' stratification reflects the social hierarchy of the time, with elites occupying the higher levels and middle-class individuals in the lower strata. Analysis revealed that 30% to 40% of the mummies were children as young as two years old and newborns. This suggests the presence of infections or diseases that could wipe out entire families.
Medical Insights from the Mummies
In collaboration with doctors at the University Hospital in Aswan, the team performed X-rays, CT scans, and DNA analysis on the mummies. They discovered that anemia and infectious diseases, including tuberculosis, were common causes of death. These findings provide valuable information about the health and living conditions of ancient Egyptians.
Future Prospects
The discovery has been hailed as "exceptional" by Piacentini, who emphasizes its promise for further revelations. The team has mapped out at least 300 tombs in the necropolis, covering about 215,000 square feet (20,000 square meters), and there may be more to uncover.
