As mankind's efforts to learn more about space intensify, NASA has employed a priest and other religious experts to assist people on Earth prepare for the opportunity of life from another planet.
It appears like the plot of a terrible sci-fi film, but NASA is really recruiting a priest to assist prepare for humanity's encounter with aliens.
No, they aren't being sent into space to combat a space demon.
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is enlisting the aid of 24 theologians in a bid to determine how world religions would respond to news about extraterrestrial life.
Reverend Dr. Andrew Davison, a theologian at the University of Cambridge who holds a doctorate in biochemistry from the rival University of Oxford, is among them.
The Collins Dictionary explains, "A theologian is a scholar who studies the nature of God, religion, and religious beliefs."
Why is NASA hiring religious experts now?
Because of new developments in humanity's search for life in the vast unknown, NASA is now looking for professionals.
Missions such as the James Webb Telescope, which is set to launch on Christmas Eve, and the Planck mission, which will explore dark energy and dark matter, are among a slew of new objectives that will further our understanding of space.
Additionally, the Rosiland Franklin rover from the European Space Agency will depart next year.
The Rosiland Franklin will drill into Mars' surface in an attempt to find fossilized microorganisms, which would indicate the presence of life.
Meanwhile, experts in Cardiff have suggested that ammonia in Venus's atmosphere may have been produced by living things.
The NASA-sponsored discussion was held at Princeton University's Centre for Theological Inquiry to tackle issues about how life on another planet might impact thoughts about gods and creation.
According to the Rev Dr. Davidson, the chances of finding a life that is beyond this one are becoming increasingly probable.
In Astrobiology and Christian Doctrine, David Davison raises the issue of whether God could have established life on other planets. Or might he have sent a redeemer to die for the sins of alien species?
The theologians were invited in to “consider the implications of applying 21st-century science to issues that had been addressed in religious traditions for hundreds or thousands of years”, according to NASA's former head of Astrobiology Institute, Carl Pilcher.
When I was informed that earth is the only planet in space with life on it, I didn't believe it. "That's just unthinkable when there are well over a hundred billion stars in this galaxy and well over a hundred billion galaxies in the universe," he said.
Dr. Peter Diamandis, an expert in experiential education and author of the book "Billionaire" said it's critical to plan far ahead when it comes to how we should deal with extraterrestrial life once we discover it.
