A 12-year-old Nigerian has made history by discovering a new mathematical principle.
Chika Ofili, who lives in the United Kingdom and was named TruLittle Hero Awards winner this past weekend for inventing a new method of divisibility by seven in mathematics, has worked to eliminate the stigma attached to mental health.
The teacher, Miss Mary Ellis, who is also the head of the Mathematics department at Westminster Under School, stated that he came across the approach while doing a summer project. According to an educational journal called First Steps for Problem Solvers (written by UKMT), she gave students a book entitled First Steps for Problem Solvers to work through during their holiday period.
"It's not something I would have done for the average student, but his mathematical ability is far higher than most children of this age", said Miss Ellis. "We hope to publish it in Mathematics papers soon."
The book included several divisibility tests to determine whether a number is divisible by two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine before you start dividing. The book did not contain a memorable check for verifying if a number is evenly divisible by 7.
He also discovered the method and had an algebraic proof to support him.
The new method is to take the last digit of any whole number and multiply it by 5, then add it to the remainder of the number to generate a new number. If this new number is divisible by 7, then the original one must be divisible by 7 as well.
